“Castles” was a three-week research and development process, which took place at mac Birmingham during 2012-2013.

Our starting point was the novel We Have Always Lived in the Castle, by Shirley Jackson. We quickly realised that, although we love the novel, we weren’t about to create a direct adaptation. But several themes from the book – preserving, baking, community and the future – resonated with us, and were the focus of our investigations.

Snow fell so heavily throughout our final week together that we had to cancel our public sharing… but there’s a jar of the sauerkraut made during the process tucked away at the back of the fridge, preserved and biding its time…

Castles was supported by Arts Council England and mac Birmingham.
